Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant clonal neoplasm of plasma cells of B-lymphocyte origin that commonly results in overproduction of large amounts of monoclonal immunoglobulins. Important advances in the therapeutic management of this disease in the past decade have resulted in higher rates of durable complete remission, prolonged event-free survival, and improved overall survival.
Active MS-lesions in the spine may enhance, but it is not that common as we see in active lesions in the brain. Whenever spinal lesions are encountered, it can be helpful to image the brain aswell. Bisphosphonates and radiation therapy are sometimes used to reduce pain from bone lesions. Globally, multiple myeloma affected 488,000 people and resulted in 101,100 deaths in 2015. In the United States, it develops in 6.5 per 100,000 people per year and 0.7% of people are affected at some point in their lives.
